Last December, the Armstrong Real Estate Group partnered with the Nashville Classical Charter School to help deliver more than a merry Christmas. Oftentimes, when schools let out for extended breaks (such as the winter holiday break), families face challenges that they normally wouldn’t be faced with — like providing food for their children. Normally, the schools would provide students that are below the poverty level with lunch and snacks, but as the school lets out for Christmas, it becomes the burden for many families to take on. To assist them, our team agreed to sponsor 34 families last holiday season.
Our Experience
It was a great and fantastic opportunity for all our team members. In my opinion, I believe we got as much out of the experience as the families we were assisting. We wanted to live up to our business model: Serve, Contribute, and Connect. Too often we get caught up in the day-to-day aspects of our business and it was great to stop and work together to help our local community around Nashville.
Why We Got Involved
2013 was a great year for us, and as a result, we wanted to express our gratitude for all the blessings in our lives by helping those less fortunate than others. After reaching out to a few schools in the area, we quickly received a reply from Charlie Friedman, the Founder and Head of School at Nashville Classical. In the beginning, we planned on providing food for a large Christmas dinner at the school, but as we talked with Nashville Classical, it became apparent that the most critical need for the students was providing food during the holiday breaks.
We learned that many of the students attending Nashville Classical qualify for free lunches. During the school day snacks and lunches are provided for the kids. Unfortunately, during an extended school break like Summer and Christmas many of the families don’t have the means to pay for extra food to cover the meals that are normally provided by the school.
The amazing staff at Nashville Classical reached out to their students families and identified 34 families that requested assistance with food over the holidays. They helped us come up with a list of items to go in a food box that would provide meals for the family during the two week holiday break. It was an awesome experience. Members of our team shopped for the food, delivered it to Nashville Classical, helped separate it and box the food for each family and deliver it to their home.
