While the bustle and excitement of Nashville, the city continually draws visitors as well as those wishing for a more permanent stay. Nashville boasts outlying suburb neighborhoods that function independently of the city while still maintaining strong ties to its history, culture, and economy. Two such districts are Belmont-Hillsboro and 12 South — each neighborhood maintaining its own unique character while benefiting from its proximity to Nashville proper.

The Belmont-Hillsboro Community

Just three miles from downtown Nashville, Hillsboro is a mainly residential neighborhood named for the historic Hillsboro Road, which predates the Civil War, running through it. Known for its superb walking district, Hillsboro is home to independent shops, restaurants, and galleries. Here visitors will find a slower pace than in the heart of Nashville, where families can stroll the streets and green spaces. Artists can derive inspiration and shoppers who love vintage clothing will spend hours exploring each intriguing boutique. Hillsboro’s pedestrian-friendly layout is thanks in part to its former trolley line, which encouraged town planning conducive to walking.

Hillsboro is split into two sections, Hillsboro-West End and Belmont-Hillsboro, to the west and east, respectively. The Belmont section of Hillsboro is most famous for Belmont Mansion, a stunning antebellum summer home built in 1853 that today houses a museum dedicated to Tennessee’s antebellum years. The mansion is located on the campus of Belmont University, a complex built on the former grounds surrounding the mansion. Vanderbilt University is also located nearby, as is Nashville’s famous Music Row, a tangled warren of streets with businesses dedicated to Nashville’s longstanding reputation as a center for country, bluegrass and gospel music.

There are indie films and live performances to be found at the Art Deco-era Belcourt Theatre, ensuring entertainment buffs will have an endless supply of Friday night entertainment. The theatre’s concession stand is a rarity, offering wine and locally-brewed beer to its standard concession offerings.

The 12 South Community

12 South on Southern LivingRated as one of the top neighborhoods in which to live in the southern United States by Southern Living, 12 South is located, appropriately, in the area to the east of 12th Avenue South. While sporting an accessible range of trendy shops and restaurants, the area also features lovely homes and excellent schools for all ages. In this upscale neighborhood, residents can explore boutiques full of eclectic decor, sample ethnic cuisine, and enjoy a cosy, countryside retreat just minutes from the heart of the city. When residents tire of the numerous shops and restaurants, a stroll through the nearby Sevier Park will restore the senses and offer a tranquil setting far removed from Nashville’s sometimes frenetic pace.
